Kuisma is an old Finnish family name and our roots are in the Karelian Isthmus. After the Second World War Finland was forced to cede about 10 % of its land area to Soviet Union and all people living in this part of the country made an unavoidable move as refugees to the remaining parts of our country. More than 400.000 Finns had to leave their homes, among these about 2.000 members of Kuisma family.
The Kuisma Family Society was founded in the year 2000 and it has been very active during all these years. Especially we have made a comprehensive genealogy of Kuisma family based on Finnish parish registers. As a result of this work we published in January 2009 our first family book ‘Kannaksen Kuismat’ telling about history of Kuisma family in Karelia. The book also included a CD-ROM having all Kuisma pedigrees and this first version covered about 80.000 names. In this first version of pedigrees we had ten progenitors.
In our 15th Family Anniversary August 9, 2015 at Heinola we launched a new family book "KUISMA – suku Suomen kartalla". The book is accompanied by the latest update of Kuisma pedigrees. This 'Kannaksen Kuismat 4.0" covers now over 200.000 people beginning from the first written information about Anders (Antti) Kuisma and Petrus (Petri) Kuisma in Kirvu parish in 1550’s up to babies born in 2015. At the same time the number of progenitors was reduced to three.
